Losing money...
  • I don't think this is a big problem, as I think in part it's linked to the Rebrov deal. I remember reading when he left that this would be factored into our losses, thereby making it look a lot worse than it is. Typical media will try and do their best to make it seem like the club is on the edge of financial collapse.

We're a wealthy club, no major debts and we've chopped off the highest earners from last season (Ferdinand, Sheringham and soon to be Anderton). Just need to cut out people like Perry, Thatcher and Iverson and we'll be right back on our feet.

  • At first the feeling was that the fee would be about a million. But all of sudden it changed to a free a few days ago. I suspect largely because Portsmouth couldn't afford to pay anything more on top of his high wages. It's rumoured that he is on 30k a week at Tottenham, and Portsmouth could only afford to offer him just over 20k.

I suppose the feeling at Tottenham is that it is better to get him off the wage bill now, and accept that we won't get a fairly nominal fee. Which to be honest I'm starting to agree with seeing as how we're keeping Davies and Redknapp, both right footed midfielders like Anderton, and we don't have as much money as we'd like to buy anyone else. From a Fan perspective, it seems that if we lose Anderton now then we'll either be able to up the Parker bid by a million or so, or bring in a couple of good loan players.

If you're going to make an adversarial point then at least do so intelligently and/or with a degree of knowledge on what you're talking about, not as a troll.

Getting rid of those players is not "cutting the depth". Why? Because as outlined in my other posts we have a good crop of young players from the reserves and academy coming into the first team squad to take their places. Furthermore if you want a good example of players who can come into the club for less money than Sheringham (40k a week), Anderton (30k a week), then I'll show you Postiga (15k a week, not only a wonderful player but will be much more effective up front with Keane than Sheringham), and also Parker (if he signs will most likely only be about 15K as well, I don't need to explain why he would be better than Anderton).

  • how did anderton's transfer become a free one? - i thought we would get a million for him? (plus we could lay off the training staff of seven solely devoted to tending his injuries)

Absolutely right. Spurs have so many creative midfielders now, and on less wages. Anderton is on 'football's Boom Wages.' He gets £20g a week with an extra £20g on top when he plays. Thats crazy money for a player who although walks onto the pitch, doesn't always show up.

I hope Anderton does just bog off. we've had his best years (what there was of them) and at Pompey he'd get a £1mil signing on fee and £20g a week. Thats crazy money today and for a newly promoted club it's just weirdness. I sincerely hope Harry 'Any old Iron?' Redknapp resurrects the deal. If only to give his son more playing time. Maybe Jamie was bitching. 'That useless sod, he gets all the games', "Don't worry son, I'll put in a ridiculous bid for him."

And the academy is bringing through some serious talent. If we can get this current lot to start winning, then by the time the youth come through they'll have the weight of expectancy a la Man U when Giggs and his ilk made the grade and picked up where the oldies left off.

    So the wish list of off-loaders is;

    Thatcher
    Doherty
    Anderton

I hesitate to include Perry. He can still do a job when needed, and is a maniac in the tackle (witness some of his injuries last season and the way he got them.)

  • Anderton deal still on. Please please please be true.

I didn't want to get rid of him at first, but the more I think about it, the more I see how essential it is to clear him out. The financial space from his wage packet, and the opporunity it gives to Blondel, Ricketts and Marney is too good to pass up.

Unfortunately it looks like Doherty will still be here next season. This is another one where at first I wanted to keep him, but now I think we'd be much better off chopping him out of the club.

  • This is probably old news, but the July 2003 World Soccer magazine (the one with Maldini kissing the CL trophy on the cover) lists the worlds 20 richest clubs. It shows Spurs as #17 on the list. It looks at Revenues (not considering transfer income), Wage Bill, and Net Transfer Spending (for 2001-02 & 2002-03 combined). Here are the figures in Euros.

    Rank. Team.....Rev...Wage..NTS
    1. Real Madrid...252....140....95.6
    2. Man U.........207.3...98.3....79.9
    3. Juventus.....195.....103....41.8
    4. Bayern Mun..176......38....37.5
    5. AC Milan......161.7...107...87.4
    6. Chelsea.......161......76.5..39.7
    7. Barcelona....148......102...53.3
    8. AS Roma......143.8....90...(0.1)
    9. Liverpool......138.6....69.1..22.1
    10. Arsenal.......127.4....84.5..33.7
    11. Inter..........125.7...118....59
    12. Leeds.........114.1.....74...(24.5)
    13. Lazio..........112.....123.7...(0.7)
    14. Dortmund....102.4....66.3...44.2
    15. Newcastle.....99.3....44.4...61.6
    16. Tottenham.....91......44......15
    17. Leverkusen.....80......40.......8.7
    18. Celtic............79.6....38.7...10.9
    19. Aston Villa......65.4....30.9...33.4
    20. Rangers..........62.7...50.8...(2.8)

Obviously those in parens are negative numbers. I hope you find this interesting, sorry if its off topic.

  • To back up what I was saying earlier, about this announcement being purely a writedown of player transfer values (i.e. Rebrov) rather than a statement of doom. Here's a good thread from the BBC Tottenham forum:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/h2/h2.cgi?thread=%3C1058202750-20528.12%40forum3.mh.bbc.co.uk%3E&find=%3C1058202750-20528.12%40forum3.mh.bbc.co.uk%3E&board=606.tottenham&sort=Te

The bad news, we look to have missed a great chance to chop Anderton off the wage bill. But at least he only has one year left, so we can get rid of him then.
